Doncaster Young Voices

Doncaster Young Voices

Doncaster Young Voices is a group of choirs for young people aged between 4 -16. From our youngest singers in DYV Junior Choir, to the eldest in DYV Youth Choir.

We’re passionate about unlocking young people’s potential through choral singing. Here’s why we think DYV is great:

  • Develop a love and a joy of singing
  • Learn about different cultures
  • Research shows that you will do better in school and college, through singing with others
  • Learn to appreciate the arts
  • Develop skills which will set you up throughout life
  • Represent Doncaster
  • Learn from world class leaders

Doncaster Children's Choir Music Director

Doncaster Young Voices’ Artistic Director is Matt Beckingham, who has conducted youth choirs for Opera North, Sage Gateshead, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and others, alongside his previous role as Artistic Head of the Vocal Programme for Opera North Education.  Matt has performed at Buckingham Palace for HM The Queen, to playing arena’s and festivals. He has recorded at studios, including Abbey Road’s iconic Studio 2, through to preparing choirs for numerous performances at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. Matt is passionate about helping young people to: discover the joy of singing; discover great music; feel supported and grow in confidence.

Doncaster Young Voices meets in Sprotbrough, at SMC | Sprotbrough Methodist Church. Park Drive, Sprotbrough, DN5 7SD

Auditions?

We don’t do formal auditions (phew!), and our joining process is simple, and we hope, fun & friendly. We’re never looking for perfection, just potential.

All are welcome to attend the Junior Choir, without any assessment whatsoever.

For the Children’s Choir & Youth Choir, first of all, come along, and try it out! If you like it, and would like to join, the Artistic Director would love to hear you sing. You can choose whether you’d like to do this in person, or you can record yourself and send it in. This is an opportunity for the Artistic Director to get to know your voice, and hear how we can best help you thrive. For the Youth Choir, we might have a follow-up session in person – a bit like a short singing lesson – where we can try a few things out, and work out which voice part would best suit you. After hearing you sing, either in person or pre-recorded, we’ll get in touch to let you know if we’re able to offer you a place. If you’re aged 10 – 12, you will have noticed that you could either be in the Children’s Choir, or the Youth Choir. The informal assessment is a great way for us to offer you a place in the choir which would best serve you, and help you progress.

So, first step… come along & try it out!
